Does career coaching work? yes, here’s an example
Yes Career Coaching works. I recently helped a client quit her job, negotiate to keep her equity in the company, and stay on as a very part time consultant, on her terms. All this while landing in a comfortable financial reality.
This client came to me feeling stuck. She was in an executive role at an international startup. Her academic training, including a PhD and MBA, helped her follow a career path that was rewarding and made sense. She'd worked hard to get to where she was. But when she reached out to me, none of it felt good.
We worked together over a period of months. I asked questions about the different parts of her life and how they were contributing to what she was feeling about her career. I got to know her. I gave her a place to talk through her struggles at this job and a place to take seriously the idea of doing something different. She’s smart. I gave her space to solve problems, and she did. There were many blocks, both internal and external, to her desired change. With new perspective, ideas, motivation, accountability, belief, strategies, books, homework, songs, and difficult action steps, something big changed.
She’s in a better place. That’s what she says. With more openness. More opportunity. More time. Without the daily weight of a job that was sinking like the Titanic in slow motion. I am excited to see what she does next. And so is she.
